ZELDA WII U

Bad news for those of us who were excited about the possibility of Zelda starring in Zelda Wii U. Eiji Aonuma, the Zelda producer who first made the “No one ever said that was Link” comment, has spoken again. This time MMGN spoke to him and he had this to say:

“”It’s a rumour,” Aonuma said with a chuckle when I asked him about the speculation buzzing around online.
“Actually that comment I made jokingly,” he said. “It’s not that I said that it wasn’t Link. It’s that I never said that it was Link. It’s not really the same thing, but I can understand how it could be taken that way.
“It seems like it has kind of taken off where people are saying ‘oh it’s a female character’ and it just kind of grew. But my intent in saying that [was humour]. You know, you have to show Link when you create a trailer for a Zelda announcement.”
However, he doesn’t want players to focus too much on Link’s appearance in the trailer.
“I don’t want people to get hung up on the way Link looks because ultimately Link represents the player in the game,” he said.
“I don’t want to define him so much that it becomes limiting to the players. I want players to focus on other parts of the trailer and not specifically on the character because the character Link represents, again, the player.””

So, a female protagonist is a joke? In a separate interview with IGN on the subject, Aonuma also said this:

“”I’m interested in seeing something like that, but I think one of the charm points of this particular franchise is that fact that it’s called ‘Legend of Zelda’ but Zelda is not the main character,” Aonuma said. “She’s not the protagonist. But if you ask me what that is, I don’t know. I can’t really explain it. Maybe if she’s the main character, then maybe the title needs to change.””

I think it’s stupid that they won’t make a Zelda game where the player can play as Zelda, but fine. Let’s get over that fact. Why not make it possible to play as either a male or female Link? If Link is only meant to represent the player of the game, then they should make him represent both male and female gamers. It’s not like they ever let Link have any real romance in the games. It wouldn’t be weird. But let’s be realistic, they’re not doing that anytime soon. At least the upcoming Hyrule Warriors game will offer gamers more choices, letting them choose from a big cast of both male and female characters from the Zelda series.

ASSASSIN’S CREED: UNITY

To wrap up E3, Ubisoft released a behind the scenes dev video on the lead up to E3:

That was a pretty interesting video, but like I said in my E3 coverage, I’m still disappointed with Unity coming out of E3. The game itself looks great, but I don’t want co-op forced into my single player story campaign. I also feel for all of the female gamers who actually do want to do the co-op and won’t be represented with female avatars because the company was too lazy or stingy or whatever the real reason was.

RAT QUEENS

RQ 1 - Screen 1

The awesome news of the day is that Rat Queens (one of my favorite comics going right now) is going to be made into a cartoon! According to Variety, “Pukeko and Heavy Metal, which acquired the rights to “Rat Queens,” plan on developing the books” into a 30 minute show before pitching it to TV networks.” That’s pretty freakin’ awesome. I can’t wait to see these girls come alive as animated characters. Their theme song HAS to be Bad Reputation by Joan Jett. I don’t know what network they’d air on, though. It would definitely have to be cable. Maybe FX?

What did you all think of my E3 Coverage and news this week? Did I miss any big E3 news or other news that interested you all this week?

What are y’all playing this weekend?

I’ll mostly be playing the Destiny Alpha. If I have time, I might start either Mirror’s Edge or The Witcher 2. Those are the only two games left in my Steam backlog, at least until summer sales come around, when I’ll likely add a couple more to the list.

JUNE POLL

I couldn’t think of anything very timely for this month’s poll, so I went with a Mass Effect poll. I want to know who your favorite characters in Mass Effect are. Multiple selections are allowed! It’s really tough to choose favorites, but I narrowed mine down to five. I voted for FemShep, Liara, Garrus, Joker, and The Illusive Man. I don’t like The Illusive Man, but I think he’s a really interesting character and villain.
